Gary Lineker has landed a shock new role at the BBC after leaving Match of the Day.

The former England striker will front a new football highlights show, which will air on BBC One on Saturday evenings.

The show will be called Match of the Day with Gary Lineker, and will feature highlights from the Premier League, Championship, Scottish Premiership and other major European leagues.

Lineker said he was "delighted" to be joining the BBC, and that he was looking forward to presenting the new show.

"I've always loved football, and I'm passionate about bringing the best action to viewers," he said.

"I'm confident that Match of the Day with Gary Lineker will be a must-watch for football fans of all ages."

The BBC's head of sport, Barbara Slater, said she was "thrilled" to have Lineker on board.

"Gary is one of the most respected and experienced broadcasters in the country," she said.

"His knowledge of football is second to none, and he has a unique ability to connect with viewers.
