Paul Skenes: From Air Force Cadet to MLB Prospect

Cadet to Crusader

Before Paul Skenes was a top MLB prospect, he was a cadet at the United States Air Force Academy. Skenes pitched for the Air Force Falcons for two seasons and was arguably their best pitcher. In his first two seasons, Skenes was 15–3 with a 3.38 ERA and 222 strikeouts in 162 innings.

A Decision that Changed his Life

After his sophomore season at Air Force, Skenes decided to leave the academy and pursue a career in professional baseball. He was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 37th round of the 2021 MLB Draft but eventually signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Foreshadowing Future Success

Skenes' time at the Air Force Academy foreshadowed his future success in professional baseball. He was a dominant pitcher for the Falcons and showed tremendous potential. His decision to leave the academy and pursue a career in baseball was a gamble, but it has paid off so far.

Skenes is now one of the top prospects in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization. He is expected to make his MLB debut in 2023 and could be a key part of the Pirates' future success.
