Japan Earthquake Triggers Tsunami Warnings

7.5 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Noto Peninsula

At least four people have been killed and tsunami warnings have been issued following a 7.5 magnitude earthquake in western Japan

The earthquake struck the Noto peninsula at around 4:10 pm local time and had a magnitude of 7.6 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued a tsunami warning for the coastal areas of the Noto peninsula and the prefectures of Ishikawa, Toyama, and Fukui. The warning was later lifted, but residents in the affected areas have been advised to evacuate to higher ground.

The earthquake caused widespread damage to buildings and infrastructure in the Noto peninsula. Several buildings collapsed, and roads and bridges were damaged. At least four people have been killed and many more injured. The Japan Self-Defense Forces have been deployed to the affected areas to assist with rescue and recovery efforts.

The earthquake is the strongest to hit Japan since the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. That earthquake had a magnitude of 9.0 and caused widespread damage and loss of life. The government of Japan has urged residents in the affected areas to be prepared for aftershocks and to follow the instructions of local authorities.
