Zach Arnett: The Lone Rookie Coach in the SEC
A New Face in the Southeastern Conference
Zach Arnett, a 36-year-old New Mexico native, is not only the lone rookie among the Southeastern Conference's (SEC) 14 coaches, but he also brings a unique path to the prestigious league. Arnett cut his coaching teeth at San Diego State, where he served as defensive coordinator for four seasons before being hired by Mississippi State in December 2022.
The Coaching Journey to the SEC
Arnett's coaching career began at Eastern New Mexico, where he played and earned his bachelor's degree. After graduating, he spent two seasons as a graduate assistant at New Mexico before landing at San Diego State in 2017.
Under Arnett's leadership, San Diego State's defense ranked among the FBS's top 25 in total defense in three of his four seasons. In 2021, the Aztecs ranked 12th nationally in scoring defense, allowing just 17.8 points per game.
Salary and Contract Details
Mississippi State gave Arnett a four-year contract worth $3 million annually. The contract includes incentives that could increase his annual salary to $4.5 million.
With his rookie season in the SEC approaching, all eyes will be on Arnett to see how he can guide the Bulldogs through the competitive landscape of the conference.
